Short Answer: Water-Resistant, Not Waterproof
No Tortuga backpack is fully waterproof. All of our bags are water-resistant, meaning they'll handle light rain and splashes, but prolonged exposure to heavy rain can let moisture in — especially through zipper seams.
Travel Backpack Pro 40L
The Pro uses SHELL200 fabric (also known as EPX200 by Challenge Sailcloth), which is a waterproof sailcloth material. The fabric itself repels water extremely well. The zippers are also water-resistant. However, because the bag is hand-sewn with seams and zippers, it is not a sealed, submersible product. In a light to moderate rain, the Pro performs very well. In a sustained downpour, some water may eventually seep through the seams.
Travel Backpack Lite 40L
The Lite uses a lighter fabric with a water-resistant coating. It will handle light rain, but it's less resistant than the Pro in wet conditions. We recommend a rain cover for the Lite if you'll be in rainy climates.
Do You Sell Rain Covers?
We do not currently sell rain covers. However, any generic 40L rain cover from REI, Amazon, or similar retailers will work with our bags. We've heard good things about REI's store brand covers. If you're buying for the Pro specifically, you may not need one for typical travel conditions — but it's a good idea for extended backpacking trips in wet climates.
Tips for Rainy Travel
- Use a rain cover or a large dry bag liner inside your pack for extra protection.
- Put electronics and valuables in a waterproof pouch or dry bag inside the main compartment.
- After exposure to rain, open compartments and air-dry the bag before storing it.
