Will my Tortuga backpack fit as a carry-on?

Designed for Carry-On Travel

Tortuga's travel backpacks are designed to fit in the overhead bin as a carry-on. The Travel Backpack Pro 40L and Travel Backpack Lite 40L are both sized at the maximum carry-on dimensions accepted by most major airlines (22" x 14" x 9").

Major Airlines (United, Delta, American, Southwest, JetBlue, etc.)

Our 40L bags fit within published carry-on size limits for all major US and international airlines. Thousands of Tortuga customers fly with these bags every week without issue. That said, enforcement varies — a fully packed bag may get more scrutiny than a half-full one.

Budget Airlines (Ryanair, EasyJet, Spirit, Frontier, etc.)

Budget airlines often have stricter and smaller carry-on allowances. Some budget carriers (especially European ones like Ryanair) may require you to pay for overhead bin access or restrict carry-ons to personal-item size. We recommend checking your specific airline's size limits before you fly. Our 40L bags may not comply with the strictest budget airline policies.

Personal Item / Under-the-Seat Bags

If you need a bag that fits under the seat in front of you, our Daypack Pro (25L) is designed for that. It works as a personal item on most airlines and pairs perfectly with a 40L bag in the overhead. There is no universally agreed-upon personal item size — every airline is different — so always check your airline's published dimensions.

Tips for Flying with a Tortuga

  • Don't overpack. A 40L bag packed to the brim will look bigger and attract attention.
  • Use compression packing cubes to keep the bag compact.
  • Tuck in the hip belt and shoulder straps to give the bag a cleaner, suitcase-like profile.
  • If you're nervous, board early so overhead bin space isn't contested.
